Sveti Stefan

Located just 5 km from Budva along the Adriatic coast of Montenegro, Sveti Stefan (Saint Stephen) is the one of the world's most unique seaside resorts, with worldy charm and character. Its distinguished guest list, includes Willy Brandt, Bobby Fischer, Boris Spassky, Sofia Loren, Carlo Ponti, Monica Vitti, Ingemar Stenmark, Kirk Douglas, Sylvester Stallone and Claudia Schiffer.

Sveti Stefan

Sveti Stefan is also distinguished by the ironies that helped make it what it is today. Though a world-renowned resort offering the ultimate in rest and relaxation, the villagers of nearby Pastrovici created Sveti Stefan following a bloody Turkish attack on the region in the 15th century. As the Turks anchored off the beaches of Sveti Stefan and marched to destroy nearby Kotor, the villagers of Pastrovici raised an army that annihilated the Turkish forces, confiscated its ships, and invested the Turkish gold in the construction of a fortress.

This fortress contained twelve houses for each Pastrovič clan, and an Orthodox church dedicated to Saint Stefan, from which the former island got its name. Before long, Sveti Stefan became a bustling town of over 100 houses, 400 inhabitants, two more churches, and a 400 year old judicial system in a region where brute strength historically resolved disputes.

In another twist of irony, during Yugoslavia's communist regime, the descendants of Saint Stefan's founders were evicted in order to convert their homes into a prestigious resort for the rich and famous. Many of these former residents of Sveti Stefan now live on the mainland, in a town of the same name.

Just off of Sveti Stefan's shores is the resort known as Miločer. Following the establishment of communist Yugoslavia and exile of the Karadjordjeviič royal family, Miločer was confiscated by the communist authorities and converted into another luxurious hotel.

Both Miločer and Sveti Stefan are wonderful retreats from the bustling towns and cities abuzz during Montenegro's busiest seasons.
